Arriving at the theatre
The Cuvilliés Theatre sits inside the Munich Residenz, with its own entrance reached from Residenzstraße 1 in the old town.
Arriving with time to spare
Give yourself time to find your box and settle in before the hall fills, rather than arriving right at the advertised start.
Into the tiers
Boxes climb four levels around a horseshoe-shaped hall built in the 1750s, all facing the same stage Mozart once wrote for.
About two hours of music
The Residenz-Solisten's gala concert runs close to two hours, drawing on a repertoire that returns often to Mozart, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn, Johann Strauss, Rossini and Dvořák.
A room that rewards a longer look
Carved and gilded surfaces across every tier were dismantled for safekeeping in 1943, survived the building's destruction the following year, and were reinstalled when the theatre reopened in 1958 — worth a closer look before the music starts.
After the final bow
Munich's old town and Odeonsplatz are a short walk from the Residenz, ready for a last stop on the way back to your hotel.
